Mogadishu, 24, June 2018 – Mayor of Mogadishu and Governor of Benadir Regional Administration H.E Abdirahman Omar Osman (Eng. Yarisow) encouraged the efforts of Ifrah Foundation and the Global Media Campaign to promote women and girls’ rights.
Governor Yarisow met yesterday at his office in Mogadishu Ms Ifrah Ahmed, founder of Ifrah Foundation along with the Global media campaign Programme Director, Ms Naimah Hassan.
Mayor Yarisow said “Benadir Regional Administration and Mogadishu Municipality plans to develop policies and strategies to end FGM practices in the capital city of Mogadishu in the near future. We all need to promote and advocate the rights of all citizens.”
The Ifrah Foundation has championed the cause of the abolishing of FGM in Somalia and Campaign (formerly at Guardian) signature trainings aiming to give key societal influencers and informers like religious leaders, youth activists, or broadcasters the skills, knowledge, and grants need to increase profile of FGM where it is most practiced.
Mayor Yarisow confirmed his commitments and support to Ifrah Foundation and the Global media Campaign.
“Supporting women and girls is highly encouraged and the Benadir region will provide its effort in extending its administration and municipality to welcome those attending the conference/ training ” said Mayor Yarisow
The importance of Women’s rights was the centre of discussion highlighting the hardships they encounter especially young Somali girls who have fallen victim to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Mayor Yarisow welcomed the Global media Campaign and Ifrah Foundation for their plans to organize a High level conference by end of July followed by a 4 day religious, media and academic training.
